摘要
Latin America is emerging as a region of great democratic stagnation. In this paper, I empirically analyzed the level of political regimes to understand this situation. The central objective was to comparatively evaluate Latin American countries in their levels of political regime. The research was carried out based on an assessment of political regimes according to the Democracy Index (2022) classification. The methodology consisted of a comparative investigation between Latin American countries in the years 2017 to 2021 using descriptive analysis of data from the Democracy Index survey (2022). According to procedural -based Contemporary Democratic Theory, a democratic regime needs to meet some minimum conditions for the success of the democratic method. Most of these countries met the electoral requirements of democracy. However, Nicaragua, Cuba and Venezuela were not classified as democracies. The results of the investigation confirmed a process of deterioration in most Latin American political regimes, except Uruguay, Costa Rica, Chile and Brazil. The latter was the only country to show no variation in its numbers.
