Lower rim functionalized bowl-shaped resorcin[4]arene with alkyl arms: A simplified approach to build supramolecular liquid crystals

摘要
Herein, a simple two step method was used to prepared bowl-shaped supramolecular mesogens based on resorcin[4]arene containing octa-substituted alkyl arms. The introduction of alkoxy tail group at their pe-ripheries has different effect on the exhibition of the mesogenic behavior of the materials. These function-alized supramolecular compounds were investigated for their liquid crystalline properties and molecular self-assembly type behavior. The lower alkyl arm substituted supramolecules shows SmC type mesogenic properties while higher alkyl arm substituted compounds display columnar hexagonal type mesogenic properties. Thus, in the resorcinarene based materials, the role of alkoxy chain affects the transition tem-perature, including the self-assembly of the compounds. The prepared supramesogens are promising to stabilize the mesophase over a higher temperature range. The structure-property correlation is also dis-cussed in the present study. This research suggest that the calix[4]resorcinarene core is a better candidate to fabricate supramolecular materials to achieve liquid crystalline properties with higher thermal stabil-ity. The structural confirmation and characterization of resorcinarene based compound has been charac-terized by using different analytical and spectroscopic techniques.
