The idea of thinking about the national state in Brazil and South America became the main question of the intellectuals who occupied spaces of studies on Brazilian and South American foreign policy, in the case of Brazil since the emergence of the IHGB, many thought on the aegis of building the Empire and strengthening its southern borders. With the positivism and the failure of the republican project, the question of sovereignty returned to be the subject of debates, provoking the pragmatic action of the agents of the Brazilian State, this article intends to analyze the ideas of one of these intellectuals, Antonio Coelho Rodrigues who left registered in his text "The Republic in South America", his ideas and his rejection of what he called the Brazilian government's American line and proposed a political practice of valuing Brazilian sovereignty, in comparison to other neighboring countries.
