This article explores the meaning of 'intellectualism' in the first phase of Victorianism, with particular reference to its perception of tendencies in German thought of the time. To a certain extent this phase in our common, and yet distinctly different, histories of thought stands at the beginning of the 'modern' formation of 'isms'.
