Investigation of factors affecting tobacco and e-cigarette use in Turkey

Background/aimIt is important to identify and understand the determinants of the use of tobacco and e-cigarette when addressing their usage. The aim of this study was to determine the sociodemographic and economic factors that affect tobacco and e-cigarette concurrent use.MethodsIn this study, the micro data set of the Turkey Health Survey conducted by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TURKSTAT) in 2019 was used. Bivariate probit regression analysis was used to determine the factors associated with the tobacco and e-cigarette use status of individuals.ResultsIt is seen that 31% of the individuals participating in the research use tobacco and 1% use e-cigarettes. While 17% of the study's participants were between the ages of 45 and 54, 34% were under the age of 34. According to the study, 69% of individuals are married. In the study, it was determined that the rate of individuals who have difficulty paying for health services is 11%.ConclusionAccording to the study, appropriate strategies should be developed to reduce tobacco and e-cigarette consumption by taking public health strategies and determinants affecting tobacco and e-cigarette use into account to raise awareness of the adverse health effects of tobacco and e-cigarette use.
