Up to the present date,our knowledge concerning the origin of deoxy-ribose compounds is very limited.The first detailed report on the biosynthesisand degradation of deoxyribose-5-phosphate was made in 1952 by Rackerwho isolated and purified from Escherichia coli an enzyme(DR-5-P aldolase)catalyzing the following reversible reaction:
