The traditional treatment for primary malignant tumors involving theinnominate bone is hemi-pelvictomy.In recent years, under the control ofchemotherapy or radiation therapy, partial or complete resection of innominatebone with preservation of the lower extremity has been reported.Since 1983,five patients in our hospital have successfully undergone resectionof hemi-pelves and femoral heads, which were replaced by titanium-alloy hemi-pelves and total hip prostheses.Among the five patients, two were diagnosed with chondrosarcoma.Beforeand after operations, they were treated with an adequate dosage of chemotherapywith no untoward reactions.During the three-year follow-up they had no pain intheir affected limbs and could walk with canes. One of them resumed his previouswork. The other three patients diagnosed with giant-cell tumor of bone werefollowed up for ten months to one year. After the operation, they all could walkwith crutches.Based on the experience in treating the five cases,we think that in carefullyselected cases,a limb-saving procedure,i.e.,inserting a prosthesis after hemi-pelvictomy may he indicated for preservation of the limb and its function.
