Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH, EC 1.1.1.27), widely existing in different tissues of various species of animals, catalyzes the reversible interconversion of lactate and pyruvate. In mammals and birds, it is a tetramer composed of A-subunit and B-subunit. It has been established that there are five LDH isozymes with different combinations of A- and B-subunit proportions.
