Aggregation via noncovalent bonding is very common behavior of many macrocyclic conjugated molecules in condensed media (especially in aqueous solution). This phenomenon causes dramatic changes in the excited-state properties of molecules. Exciton theory has been developed to explain aggregation and numerous studies have been performed to account for its mechanism.
