This study aimed to investigate the possible involvement of hereditary factors in the risk modulation of arseniasis in two clans of different ethnic origin living in one village for generations. A questionnaire-based study was performed in an ethnic Hmong clan P and a Han clan G1 in one village. The data was checked with the arseniasis case archives since 1980s. At the same time, arsenic concentrations in environmental samples (coal, indoor air, drinking water, corn and chili pepper that were baked over the stoves for desiccation) and in bio-specimens (urine and hair of members of both clans) were determined. Active efflux system of glutathione-conjugates of arsenic mediated by MRP1/ABCC1 may be an important route of arsenic detoxification in eukaryotes.
