An unlikely participant in the Augustan cultural and literary revolutionwas Herod the Great, king of Judaea between 40 and 4 B.C. Wellknown in popular imagination for his alleged role in the Christian nativitystory,Herod was the earliest example of the Augustan system of clientkings who were to rule the native kingdoms on the eastern frontier ofRome and assist in their Romanization.
