Research on application of superconducting fault current limiter in MMC- MTDC

The application of the modular multilevel converter (MMC) is attracting more and more attention. Owing to the technology difficulty and economy problem, there has been little breakthrough in the DC breaker research. Superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) is alternatively one kind of ideal current limiting device which can protect the transmission. The SFCL in the circuit can limit the fault current by changing its operating state from superconducting to the normal state as soon as an extremely large current is detected. Here, a model of SFCL is built in PSCAD/EMTDC and the accuracy is tested. The mode is used in a three-terminal MMC- MTDC system to investigate the current limiting effect with different kinds of faults. Results show that SFCLs can properly reduce the fault current in a short time without interfering the normal operation of the system. © 2017 Institution of Engineering and Technology.
