In an environment of declining sales growth and rising costs, electric utilities and their stakeholders are exploring new rate designs that will better reflect costs while preventing inequitable bill increases for many customers. Residential demand charges have emerged as an attractive option. This article explores the benefits and challenges of introducing a demand charge into retail rates for residential customers. © 2014 Elsevier Inc.
