The US Federal Trade Commission, state attorney generals, and consumer protection laws are looking for companies that are making false claims about their green and sustainable products. Generally, determination of sustainability is achieved through evaluation of the applications and engineering or life cycle assessment (LCA). To help companies communicate about the results of LCA, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) established ISO 14025, a standard for environmental products declaration. In addition, the LCA is generally conducted by an independent third party and the EPD report is a public document that provides relevant and verified information and serves as a basis for comparison of environmental performance. An effective strategy is to consider what the consumer will get out of the statement by looking at them from the perspective of average buying public.
