Sergei Shervinsky as a translator of Ossetian poetry: On the translation method

摘要
The article attempts to consider the translation activities of the famous Russian poet, writer, art critic Sergei Vasilyevich Shervinsky (1892-1991). This side of his multifaceted work is being studied for the first time. Based on the material of translations of Ossetian poetry into Russian, the question of his translation method is raised. The study aims to examine the features of Shervinsky's poetic translation: the realization of the semantic space of the original, the transfer of national color, idiostyle, a complex of author's intentions, etc. The main research method is comparative analysis. In the course of comparing multilingual texts, the main translation solutions are identified in overcoming the difficulties associated with the specifics of the Ossetian language by the translator. The article analyzes the poetic works of the classics of Ossetian literature K.L. Khetagurov, A.Z. Kubalov, Niger (I.V. Dzhanaev) translated by Shervinsky; the problem of translation interpretation is raised. The study found that Russian texts retain the meaning of the originals, national flavor, imagery-the dominants of the translation are realized when the literary text moves to another cultural environment. However, Shervinsky did not convey all the implicit meanings and not all the author's intentions were realized. So, when translating Khetagurov's poem "Kubady", he omits some strokes in the guise of the lyrical hero, which, it seems, influenced the understanding of the completed image of the character by the translation recipient. The translator makes stylistic and syntactic changes; in some places the lines in the translation sound differently. Here, in comparison with other translations, the creative individuality of the translator is manifested to a greater extent. Niger's poem "Feast at Badel's" in Russian translation actually fully corresponds to the original, translated by equivalent lexical, stylistic means of the target language. Shervinsky reproduced the ethno-cultural component. The lines in the translation are equirhythmic (the two-foot iambic is preserved). The style of the work and translation is laconic, which allows preserving the dynamism of the narrative. The poem "Afhardty Khasan" by Kubalov is complex in terms of the author's intentions. To translate it into Russian required the skills of translating folklore and literary texts. The work blends the genres of the poem, the folk song, and the lamentation. The part of the poem in Russian was translated using equivalent semantic and stylistic means of the Russian language. Nominative-connotative words/phrases that increase the emotional tone of the tragic events narrated in the poem are reflected in their primary meanings. However, in the literal translation of units with national-cultural semantics, a part of the meaning imprinted in them remains unknown to the recipient. The elimination of some fragments of the original deprives the translated text of the author's intention.
