The layer-by-layer self-assembly method is a fast developing technique. Compared with the traditional film forming technology, the assembly materials of LbL is varied (such as polyelectrolyte, nanoparticles and organic small molecules) and LbL can control precisely surface structure and size of thin film using template. Film performance and mechanical performance can be fully assembled by controlling materials, the number of sediments, the assembly condition, etc. Based on this, the layer-by-layer self-assembly method is reviewed according to the type of self-assembly interaction and its application in electrochemical capacitor, photosensitive microcapsule, separation membrane, biological chemistry and drug release.
