Implementation and Evaluation of Android Application for Counting Varroa Mites Based on Image Processing

The infestation of varroa mites, which is one of the causes of honeybee shortage, is a daily problem for beekeepers. Human visual inspection is not easy because varroa mites are tiny bugs (1-2 mm in length). For this reason, there is a need to reduce the cost of measuring varroa mite infestation. To solve this problem, we developed an automatic counting method using image processing to count the number of mites dropped on the paper laid on the bottom of the beehive box after using antiseptics. In this paper, we report on the implementation of the proposed method as an Android application, which enables us to measure the infestation rate of mites with a single smartphone or tablet. Experimental results show that the average F1 score of our system is higher than 0.85. © 2023 Institute of Image Electronics Engineers of Japan. All rights reserved.
