Alumina extraction from coal fly ash with ammonium sulfate and sulfuric acid

A roasting activation process of coal fly ash (CFA-1) using the composite additives of ammonium sulfate ((NH4)2SO4) and sulfuric acid (H2SO4) was developed. The products obtained under different roasting conditions and their liquid-leached residues were characterized by X-ray diffractometry and scanning electron microscopy. The results show that, the composite additives promote the transformation of Al2O3 in coal fly ash into NH4Al(SO4)2; the Al2O3 extraction efficiency from coal fly ash reaches 84.7% under the optimal roasting condition, i.e., roasting at 400℃ for 2h in air with a heating rate of 7℃·min-1, the molar ratio of SO42- in mix roasting additives to Al2O3 in coal fly ash at 8.0, and the molar ratio of H2SO4 to (NH4)2SO4 at 1.5. © 2016, Editorial Department of Journal of the Chinese Ceramic Society.
