Breaking wave detection and processing based on spectral characteristics of microwave Doppler radars and EMD

Microwave Doppler radar take use of backscatter from ocean surface to get ocean information. Breaking waves will interfere radar echo and lead to decrease of radar measurement accuracy. In this paper, threshold was set to detect breaking waves, and the location that waves break was gotten, with the characteristics that amplitude and Doppler frequency of sea clutter Doppler spectrum significantly enhanced when waves break. Processing data that influenced by breaking waves were processed by the way of EMD (empirical mode decomposition) to eliminate error caused by breaking waves. Processing of measured data shows that the detection results are consistent with the fact, and the EMD processing algorithm reduces the error in center frequency estimation and improves the accuracy of inversion algorithm.
