Synthesis and properties of cationic fluorinated polyacrylate soap-free latex

Poly[2-(N, N-dimethyl amino)ethyl methacrylate]-b-poly(hexafluorobutyl acrylate)(PDMAEMA-b-PHFBA) was synthesized by reversible addition fragamentation chain transfer(RAFT)polymerization. Then, it was used as a stabilizer to prepare cationic fluorinated polyacrylate soap-free latex via soap-free emulsion polymerization. The latex particle and the polymer structure were characterized by means of FTIR spectroscopy, 1HNMR spectroscopy, TEM and DLS, respectively. The results showed that when the dosage of PDMAEMA-b-PHFBA was 2.4%(based on total mass of all materials), the latex displayed excellent stability and high monomer conversion(97.6%), Zeta potential reached +57.8 mV. The latex particle had core-shell structure and narrow particle size distribution with a particle size distribution index(0.058). The leather finished by cationic fluorinated soap-free latex showed an obvious improvement of water-proof and oil-proof properties. The contact angles with water and diiodomethane gradually increased with increase of hexafluorobutyl acrylate amount. Meanwhile, when hexafluorobutyl acrylate amount was 10%(based on total mass of all monomers), the contact angles with water and diiodomethane was up to 125° and 81.5°, respectively. © 2016, Editorial Office of FINE CHEMICALS.
