摘要
The imperative role of motivation, particularly within the realm of higher education, cannot be overstated in the pursuit of elevated research outcomes. This investigation directs its focus toward the discernment of research motivations and engagements among postgraduate students in Nigerian universities. The ultimate aim is to proffer discerning recommendations geared towards enhancing research productivity, arresting the escalating departure of local researchers, and elevating the caliber of research outputs. Employing a qualitative research methodology, specifically interviews, this study strategically engages 20 purposefully selected postgraduate students from Nigerian universities. The findings underscore the intricate and diverse nature of postgraduate students' perceptions regarding research motivation and engagement. These perceptions, inherently subjective, are contingent upon the contextual circumstances within which postgraduates find themselves. Motivations for research engagement emerge from a myriad of intrinsic and extrinsic factors, the determination of which is intricately interwoven with the prevailing circumstances and expectations. However, these commendable motivations encounter hindrances, impeding active participation in research endeavors. In light of these revelations, it is recommended that governmental support manifests through the provision of special grants, internet study facilities, electronic information resources, and an environment conducive for scholarly pursuits, especially in the underdeveloped countries. Additionally, a proactive approach to addressing postgraduate motivation is advocated, entailing effective supervision, the continual enhancement of academic information, and the cultivation of a dynamic and adaptable research culture for improved research outcomes across the world.
