GENDER, SEXUALITY AND IDENTITY IN BERNARDO CARVALHO: NOTES FOR A QUEER PEDAGOGY

This paper aims to analyze the relationships between gender identities, education and literature in the constructions of homoerotic experiences and subjectivities in the novels O filho da Mae (2009) and Simpatia pelo demonio (2016), by the carioca writer Bernardo Carvalho. It is argued that the narratives bring deviant identities to the foreground that, in many ways, call into question the crisis of the masculine, challenging heteronormative borders and their arrangements within discursive mechanisms. This discussion intends to problematize naturalized ideas in relation to gender and identity, underlining the importance of cultural practices and pedagogies that constitute the school space, as a way to "strange the curriculum" (Louro, 2020). Taking as theoretical-critical assumptions the studies formulated by Michel Foucault (2010/2018/2019/2020), Judith Butler (2008/2019), Guacira Lopes Louro (2020), among others, we hope that the research results, now developed, point to the urgency of discussing, in more depth, the issues of gender and sexuality in the classroom space.
