Impact of the implementation of antimicrobial stewardship programs on patient safety in a hospital setting: an integrative review

Introduction: From the discovery of the first antibiotic to this day, much progress has been made in the study of microbial infections. Among these advances, the creation of the Antimicrobial Management Program aims to develop integrated activities carried out by various health professionals to organize and care for the use of antimicrobials in health facilities. Objective: This integrative review aims to analyze the influence of the implementation of antimicrobial monitoring programs on patient safety in the hospital environment, identifying interfaces, determining and associated factors. Method: The search for articles was performed in the CINAHL, LILACS, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases using the descriptors: Hospital, Patient Safety and Antimicrobial Stewardship Program. Results: Initially, 1921 articles were obtained in the search, and after applying the inclusion/exclusion criteria, 15 studies were selected. Among the results observed, the following stand out: 20% (n=3) of the articles reported a reduction in hospitalization costs; The same number of articles also reported a significant decrease in infection-related mortality. Regarding the indicators of TMJ consumption, the results showed a lower defined daily dose, duration of therapy, and number of days of therapy. Conclusions: The impacts of PGA are: economic impact, clinical outcomes, impact on TMJ consumption, and microbiological cultures. Our findings provide a stimulus for the implementation of antimicrobial stewardship programs in nosocomial institutions.
