This paper proposes a comprehensive analysis and comparison of the electromagnetic performances of four PM machines, that share the main geometrical parameters and compactness, by using finite element analysis (FEA). The study is initiated by the description of the machines under study, namely: (i) Surface mounted PMs (SPMs) machine, (ii) Consequent pole (CP) machine, (iii) Interior PMs (IPMs) machine, and (iv) Flux-switching (FS) machine. Then, an investigation of the machines performances is provided. To do so, the no- and on-load features are numerically predicted, such as : air-gap flux density, back-EMFs, cogging and electromagnetic torque. The last part of the paper is devoted to an in depth comparison of the electromagnetic machine performances.
