摘要
Background:Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy (DPN), a debilitating complication of diabetes, significantly impacts the quality of life and poses risks such as amputations. In Saudi Arabia, the rising prevalence of diabetes necessitates greater awareness of DPN, its risk factors, and preventive measures.Aim:This study investigates DPN awareness, knowledge of risk factors, and management practices among Saudi Arabian residents, focusing on demographic influences.Materials and Methods:A cross-sectional study among 420 subjects used structured questionnaires. Chi-square and regression analyses tested the association of demographic factors with DPN awareness. Results:Awareness gaps were profound, as only 46.7% were aware of DPN and 29.3% reported a good understanding of DPN. Age (P = 0.028), education (P = 0.047), and diabetes status (P = 0.002) significantly impacted awareness. Low levels of preventive practices were recorded for foot care and glucose monitoring at 33.3% and 32.4%, respectively. The main complications included foot ulcers (31.9%) and amputations (31.7%).Conclusion:There is a significant knowledge gap that emphasizes the need for educational interventions based on demographic and cultural factors. Early screening and comprehensive management programs are crucial for mitigating complications and improving patient outcomes.
