Rhizomania caused by Beet necrotic yellow vein virus (BNYVV) and storage losses caused by fungal root rots are serious sugar beet production problems. Rhizomania leads to small wine-glass-shaped roots, excessive root hairs, and yellow leaves. The fungal growth on the root surface leads to black lesions and sucrose loss. Thus, experimental sugar beet cultivars were evaluated for resistance to BNYVV during the 2023 growing season and for storage rots during the subsequent storage season in southern Idaho. The study identified the sugar beet cultivars with resistance to BNYVV and storage rots to increase yield and profits.
