摘要
Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of virtual reality therapy (VRT) in improving sleep quality among Bosnian young adults. Methods: A total of 283 participants were initially selected using a convenience sampling approach. From these, 18 poor sleepers were randomly chosen for the second phase of the study. Sleep quality was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The 18 participants were randomly assigned to one of three groups (6 participants per group): (1) VRT group, (2) active control group (psychoeducation about sleep hygiene and behavioral strategies for improving sleep), and (3) passive control group. The data were analyzed using a multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) with post hoc comparisons and paired samples t tests. Results: The results show that, in post-intervention comparisons, the VRT group had significantly lower PSQI scores compared to the passive control group, indicating an improvement in sleep quality. Within the VRT group, there was a significant improvement in PSQI scores both after 2 weeks and at post-intervention, compared to pre-intervention. No significant differences were observed in PSQI scores within the passive control group. Conclusions: Our study underscores the potential of VRT as an effective method for improving sleep quality over a relatively short time frame, compared to psychoeducation. Further research is recommended to validate these findings and explore the potential of VRT as a therapeutic intervention for improving sleep quality. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.
