摘要:
Limited research has qualitatively examined how mental health impacts the college success of former foster youth. This study qualitatively examines (1) How former foster youths' mental health impacts educational attainment, and (2) The facilitators and barriers to managing mental health. 14 interviews were conducted with former foster youth and the staff who support them. Results indicate that untreated mental health issues impact academic persistence. Barriers include difficulty communicating needs, inadequate service access, and limited family support. Facilitators include extrafamilial emotional and community connection. Findings highlight the need for programs designed to support former foster youths' mental health during college.
