An Algorism' is a didactic text on the art of calculation with Hindu-Arabic numerals and was first translated into German in the 15th century. Yet as early as the 13th century, we frequently find the term `algorism' in German texts in a context fully decoupled from mathematics. This paper will examine the use of this term in late medieval and early modern German texts and inquires into its relevance to the history of science and culture.
