摘要
Pain plays a significant role in Aristotle's philosophy- particularly in his ethics and psychology-yet it has long been overlooked or misunderstood by mainstream scholarship. This study attempts to reconstruct Aristotle's understanding of pain from his scattered discussions on the subject. It argues that Aristotle employs two perspectives to grasp different experiences of pain: one centered on the disruption (kin & emacr;sis) of the natural state, and the other on the hinderance of activity (energeia). Although these two perspectives may appear unified by analogy, the former is predominantly guided by a medical model, aiming to provide an ontological account of (bodily) pain, while the latter adopts a practical model, providing a functional account of (broadly defined) unpleasant experiences. The result invites us not only to reconsider the relationship between pain and pleasure, but also to integrate the broader experience of pain into the concerns of practical philosophy, rather than relegating it solely to the domain of medical treatment.
