In this paper, I use Croce's aesthetics of intuition to argue, in three stages, that presence and process are implicit albeit already central aesthetic categories from the beginning of aesthetic modernity. Firstly, Croce's aesthetic theory is based on sensual perception as a particular form of knowledge. Secondly, by emphasising the acts of production and perception, Croce's aesthetics of intuition should be understood as an aesthetics of presence. Thirdly, this implies an aesthetics of the processual with an emphasis on the presence of the sensual.
