Numerical simulations of phase separation in high-entropy and high-stability alloys

The paper uses a hybrid-numerical method to present thermodynamic simulations of phase separation in high-entropy and high-stability alloys consisting of three to seven 3d metals. It has been shown that high configuration entropy of nominal composition cannot prevent high-entropy alloys from phase separation. Instead, segregation probability increases with the number of components at low and moderate temperatures. High-stability alloys, whose ranges of single-phase formation have been predicted to widen between 700 and 1000 K, present an attractive alternative to HEAs. This effect has been elucidated based on thermodynamics with particular emphasis on the role of individual elements in phase separation.
