In order to improve the resistance of modern steel structures against various disasters, a new generation of superior high-performance(SHP) steel, combining with high strength, high ductility, corrosion resistance and fire resistance, has been developed. To investigate the overall buckling behavior of such superior high-performance steel welded I-section axial compression members, experiments were carried out on six specimens and the bearing capacity and failure modes of the specimens were identified. By comparing with the column curves in the national standard GB 50017-2017, the column curve type for designing such members was recommended. Furthermore, finite element (FE) models were established according to the conditions in the experiments and the accuracy and reliability of the models were validated. Then parametric study was carried out to analyse the effects of initial imperfections, residual stresses, material strengths and constitutive models on the overall buckling behavior. Finally, based on the analysis results FE simulation, updated column curves for the superior high-performance steel welded I-section axial compression members were proposed. The research outcomes can provide reference for practical application of this superior high-performance steel. © 2021, Editorial Office of China Civil Engineering Journal. All right reserved.
