摘要
Since the mid-20th Century, electrical stimulation of the auditory cortex has consolidated the field of cochlear implant research. This has led to a redefinition of deafness, considered by experts as a public health challenge, especially in children and newborns, affecting their development. Public health institutions have implemented measures to detect hearing loss in infants early and treat it through implant programmes. In this context, the cochlear implant programme in Spain is examined, evaluating its evolution, impact and benefits in the infant population. This analysis reveals aspects that derive from health imperatives, together with diverse interests, institutional pressures and negotiation processes involving governmental, autonomous community and hospital entities.
