Impact of MnO2 and CdO additives on optical, and physical properties of P2O5-ZnO-Na2O glass for use in optical filter

35P(2)O(5)-40ZnO-25Na(2)O-xMnO(2 )oryCdO(0 <= x, y <= 4) glasses were prepared by conventional melt-quench method. Studies have shown that MnO2 and CdO act as modifiers in the glass network. By adding MnO2 and CdO to the glass composition, the cutoff wavelength increased from 270 nm to 365 nm and 320 nm, respectively. DTA curves depicted that increasing MnO2 and CdO contents to 4 mol% leads to a gradual increase in glass transition temperatures. The direct and indirect band gap values were reduced to 3.303 eV and 2.845 eV, respectively, by the addition of MnO2 to 4 mol%. And by adding 4 mol% CdO decreased to 3.67 eV and 3.278 eV, respectively. Furthermore, the samples containing MnO2 and CdO showed a reduction in Fermi energy to 3.615 eV and 3.983 eV, respectively. Additionally, the results of the optical absorption spectrum showed that the glasses had little UV transmission, which made them suitable for use as UV filters.
