Patient education, a type of health promotion intervention

The focus of patient education has shifted from a biomedical to a biopsychosocial model, and it is now at the heart of the strategies set out in the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion: the development of individual skills, the creation of supportive environments through the care experience, the consolidation of the community approach through patient partnerships, and the reorientation of health services toward preventive clinical practices and population-based responsibility. The implementation of health-promoting patient education calls for the development of a health education continuum and the involvement of all health promotion actors.
