摘要
Background: The school setting is an essential component in the care of children with type 1 diabetes. Due to the rising incidence and prevalence of type 1 diabetes in childhood, schools are increasingly faced with the challenge of caring for children with diabetes. The aim of this qualitative study was to describe for the first time the care of children with type 1 diabetes in primary schools in Vorarlberg from the parents’ perspective and to present their wishes for optimised care. Methods: Using semi-structured, guide-assisted interviews, 6 parents of children with type 1 diabetes were interviewed about the diabetes care of their children in primary school. The interviews were recorded, transcribed, and evaluated using qualitative content analysis. Results: The parents did not experience diabetes care in primary school as structured or organized according to a plan. The process of school enrolment or return after diagnosis was described as difficult. With increasing routine in diabetes care, parents reported a positive feeling of safety during school hours. Parents wished support in diabetes care from caregivers, diabetes training for and understanding by teachers, and support services in the country. Conclusion: Health care for children with type 1 diabetes in school is challenging due to the lack of homogenous regulations and structures as well as the dependency on the goodwill of teachers. For optimised care of children with type 1 diabetes in primary school, further studies and projects are needed with the aim of integrative care. © The Author(s) 2024.
