Effect of annealing on microstructure and magnetic properties of AISI 430 steel

摘要
Soft magnetic materials like AISI 430 steel play an important role in the design of electromagnetic actuators like solenoid valves which find extensive industrial usage. The microstructural changes accompanying annealing treatment in AISI 430 steel and the performance improvement obtained in its magnetic properties is reported in this paper. A vacuum annealing cycle encompassing a total time period of 8 h and carried out at 840 degrees C followed by controlled cooling has resulted in a microstructure with coarsened grains as characterised using SEM & XRD. This is expected to lead to easy movement of domains during magnetization. A max relative permeability of 3500 approximately could be obtained using the annealing cycle followed in our work. This performance enhancement is expected to be of help in applications requiring steel with good magnetic properties.
