Challenges and opportunities in implementing intercultural education in higher education: the perceptions and practice of foreign language teachers in a Chinese university

摘要
Intercultural education (IE) is considered a response to the challenge of conflict and discrimination. This study explores the challenges and opportunities in IE in foreign language classes in a Chinese higher education institution, focusing on teachers' perceptions and practices. We find that teachers usually essentialise IE, and many intercultural opportunities are neglected. The main challenges are teachers' limited awareness of IE, concern about conflicts and the belief that IE is not their responsibility. However, elements of interculturality still enter the classroom, resulting in unconscious implementation of IE. This implies future opportunities for IE in Chinese HE if properly guided by teacher training.
