THE FANTASTIC AND THE MEMORY AS A GENERATOR OF POSSIBLE WORLDS IN "ATARDECER EN EXTREMADURA", BY ROSA CHACEL

This paper analyses the short story "Atardecer en Extremadura", by Rosa Chacel, in order to reflect on its possible connection with some ideas about the fantastic in literature. To that end, previous interpretations and readings have been reviewed, followed by the proposal of a new approach that links this short story with some notions about fantastic literature suggested by Rosie Jackson and Jaime Alazraki, as well as with the non-mimetic semantics and the theory of possible worlds by Lubomir Dole & zcaron;el. This paper concludes that the reading Chacel's short story through the prism of the fantastic and the non-mimetic can be useful to enlighten some of the less studied aspects of the short stories written by Chacel.
