Challenges and perspectives of solid waste disposal for the regional development of the Amazon: the case of the municipality of Pacaraima-RR

The present research deals with the solid waste storage system in the municipality of Pacaraima, municipality located in the extreme north of Roraima, proposing to (i) verify how the collection and storage of solid waste is carried out; (ii) describe possible environmental and social implications that the precariousness in the storage of solid waste can bring to the municipality and its citizens, and in this sense; and (iii) to identify the existence of plans or actions of intervention by the government regarding the deactivation of the dump and the construction of a sanitary landfill. This consists of a case study with: on-the-spot research mediated by observation, photographic record and conducting semi-structured interviews with a municipal representative, as well as interviewing migrants who collect recyclables on site. Thus, it was found that the waste collected in the city is deposited in the open. In addition to an open location, the dump does not have any type of identification as to the purpose of the area, nor protective fences that prevent access, attracting animals and migrants in search of their survival.
