摘要
Two previously undescribed diatom species of the recently erected genus Witkowskia are identified in samples from aquatic ecosystems in Mongolia and Russia. The first is named Witkowskia shishmarevii sp. nov. and described using light and scanning electron microscopy. Size and shape of the valves, in addition to striae densities, diagnose this species and distinguish it from congeners. A second species found in the samples from Russia and Mongolia is morphologically similar to Placoneis gastrum sensu Cox. The lectotypification of Placoneis gastrum proposed by Cox is illegitimate. As the genus Placoneis has been recently re-evaluated and sub-divided, the second species, Witkowskia murzaevii sp. nov. is Placoneis gastrum sensu Cox and distinguished by its valve shape and striae orientation as well as density. Both Witkowskia shishmarevii sp. nov. and W. murzaevii sp. nov. are compared to other species in the genus.
