Transitions from School to Work for Young People in Latin America and the Caribbean

Young people face a crucial moment in their lives when they make the transition from school to work. In developing countries, there is a challenge given the lack of labor opportunities, the mismatch between education and the labor market, and a lack of policies to tackle the issue. The objective of this research is to analyze the variables that influence the transition from school to work in six Latin American and Caribbean countries, underlining the heterogeneities between these countries. To understand this multifaceted relationship, binomial and multinomial logit models are estimated using the School-to-Work Transitions Surveys. The main results indicate that women have less probability to begin the transitions and more probability to have precarious transitions, early experiences working are not beneficial for those transitions and counteract the positive effect of education.
