Do "high-entropy alloys" have high entropy?

摘要
The paper presents numerical computations on susceptibility to phase segregation of equimolar alloys composed of ten 3d metals. All combinations from ternary to septenary compositions, up to temperature 3000 K, are considered. Both absolute and normalized values of configuration entropy and number of phases are presented. Due to the vast number of analyzed cases, the results are displayed in aggregated forms, as averages calculated for different numbers of components. The differences in absolute values of configuration entropy and number of phases are only apparent as a result of different reference numbers. After normalization, similar dependencies are predicted independently of elements' numbers in the wide temperature range between 650 and 1500 K. Therefore, from a statistical point of view, the perception of "high-entropy alloys" as an exceptional group of materials is unjustified. Additionally, the elements causing phase segregation and those benefitting the formation of single solution are being identified.
