摘要
The Armenian Algal Culture Collection (AACC) has been established recently (location: Scientific Center of Zoology and Hydroecology NAS RA, Laboratory of Applied Hydroecology). This is the first algal culture collection which comprises strains of algae originating exclusively from Armenia. At present the collection holds 333 strains, representing 54 genera from the groups Most of the isolates belong to the Chlorophyta, followed by Cyanobacteria. At present 69% of the strains originate from Lake Sevan, one of the largest sources of freshwater in Eurasia. The aim of the AACC is the investigation of the biodiversity of indigenous microalgae in the Republic of Armenia with emphasis on novel and extreme habitats. The collection is also intended to form the basis for the establishment of an algae-based bioindustry to support the economic development of the country. The AACC will become a public repository for ex situ conservation of Armenian algal biodiversity, serving the needs for research, teaching and applications. The collection is anticipated to gain significance not only at the national but also at a regional and international level.
