"Spillover" or "specificity"? The effect of upward social comparison on intertemporal decision

This research explored the effect of upward social comparison on intertemporal decision in different fields to examine whether this effect will spill over to other fields besides money. Study 1 tested the impact of upward social comparison on intertemporal decision in different fields and found that this effect is limited to the money field (in-domain) compared to the food and environment fields (out-of-domain). Study 2 investigated the impact of upward social comparison on the attention and recall of monetary and non-monetary vocabulary and found that individuals were more sensitive to monetary vocabulary after being primed with upward social comparison, which may explain the internal mechanism of the specificity effect observed in Study 1. This study explored the impact of upward social comparison on intertemporal decision, deepened researchers' understanding of the influencing factors of intertemporal decision, and provided relevant suggestions for improving individual short-sighted behavior.
