Outcomes of hepatectomy for hepatocellular carcinoma in elderly patients: a single-center study

Background: Our study aims to evaluate the early outcome of hepatectomy for hepatocellular carcinoma in elderly patients, compared with younger age groups, thereby assessing the feasibility of this technique in this vulnerable population. Methods: A retrospective analysis of 332 cases undergoing hepatectomy performed at a single center. Preoperative assessment, intraoperative variables, and postoperative outcomes were recorded and analyzed. Results: The mean age was 56.6 years old. 184 cases < 60 years old were compared with 148 cases >= 60. There was no significant difference in the rate of major hepatectomy performed in either age group. While comorbidities were more significantly associated with patients over 60, postoperative complications were not different between the two groups. Subgroup analysis of major hepatectomy revealed the same result of insignificant distinction. Conclusion: Hepatectomy, even major hepatectomy, was safe and feasible in the elderly.
