The article elucidates the role of listening in "Les Soir & eacute;es de Paris" (Evenings in Paris), Roland Barthes' personal diary entries published posthumously in the collection Incidents. Using the concept of the acousmatic - as defined by Andrzej Hejmej in reference to Pierre Schaeffer's findings - the article examines how Barthes delineates differences between creative work and passive participation in culture such as listening to the radio. In this way, the article demonstrates that narratives problematizing the theme of loneliness can effectively employ the literary approach to acousmatic situations. To that end, the article invokes the category of "anti-modernity" (by Antoine Compagnon) and juxtaposes Barthes' text with Chateaubriand's M & eacute;moires d'outre-tombe (Memoirs from Beyond the Grave).
