This paper studies the impact of proactive transshipment and staggered deliveries on the pharmaceutical supply chain performance. Therefore, a mathematical model considering transshipment and staggered deliveries is developed to minimise the total inventory management costs of a pharmaceutical supply chain under uncertain demand. To deal with this problem, a two-stage stochastic model is presented and solved using the sample average approximation. The proposed solution shows an important gain of 5% on average in the total inventory management costs when incorporating transshipment of drugs between hospitals and a gain of 32% on average when considering both transshipment and staggered deliveries.
