The effects of TiB2 on segregation bands, porosities and mechanical properties of hypoeutectic Al-Si alloys by high pressure die-casting

摘要
The hypoeutectic Al-Si-Mn-Mg alloys are often used as the self-hardening materials exempt of solution treatment by high pressure die casting (HPDC) to fabricate net-shape giga vehicle components. In this work, Al10SiMnMg and Al7SiMnMg alloys were comparatively studied to explore the effects of TiB2 addition on the evolution of segregation bands and porosities in HPDC. The results demonstrate that the effects of TiB2 addition can be divided into two-fold. On the one hand, it can significantly increase the area fraction of the externally solidified crystals (ESCs) which formed in shot sleeve; on the other hand, it refines the alpha-Al grains nucleated in die cavity ((alpha-Al)II grains). Such duplex effects greatly affect the rheological behavior of semisolid alloy in die cavity that the former one is apt to increase the shrinkage level and the latter one is conducive to the decrease of porosity. The microstructural observation confirms that the segregation band becomes blurred and the porosity is reduced in the Al10SiMnMg alloy, while the segregation band even diminish below detection and large shrinkage appears in the Al7SiMnMg alloy. Accordingly, the mechanical properties of the Al10SiMnMg alloy can be improved, while those of the Al7SiMnMg alloy are impaired after adding TiB2. This study provides a novel insight into the control of defects in HPDC.
